Ever since I was small, I’ve LOVED what us British call ‘Service Stations’. Basically they are glorified petrol/gas stations but they will have a separate building with a food court, gift shop/’newspaper shop’, nice toilets, maybe a small games arcade etc. They remind me of the excitement of going on holiday in our caravan. I recently stopped at Iowa 80, which claims to be the world’s largest truck stop, it even has its own trucking museum!
Now here’s something I may not have mentioned on my blog before. I am a girl, I’m 5ft4 inches tall AND I hold a UK class 2 truck license. Think the size of a bin lorry (garbage truck), fire engine, a coach with no passengers, anything that’s rigid, up to 4 axels. I may not have taken up truck driving, but I was a delivery driver for 3 years. I was on the road, 6 days a week, averaging around 10 hours a day during the week. I picked up things that made my life on the road easier and now I’m going to share some of my best road trip tips with you!
Ever dreamed of hitting the open road and doing an all American road trip? How about a trip down historic Route 66?! Stretching 2448 miles across America, starting in Chicago, Illinois and finishing up in LA, California, taking in a total of 8 States. This is my tried and tested 16 day Route 66 Road Trip Itinerary with side trips to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas (so essentially stepping foot in 9 States!). I include: the daily miles covered, travel time (with stops), must see roadside attractions, where to stay and where to eat!
In all honesty, I don’t think I could have done Route 66 without this guide book. It’s AMAZING. Seriously. Everyone should go out and buy it if you’re planning on taking the trip. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you…
When doing a road trip like Route 66, you pass through hundreds of little towns, all with places to stop and eat, it’s impossible to stop at every single one without either bankrupting yourself or returning home double the weight of what you were when you started! To save money, for some meals we stopped at gas stations and supermarkets such as Walmart and ate the complimentary breakfasts at the hotels, this way we only had to pay for a full meal once a day. Here are 6 of my favourite food stops along Route 66!
Route 66. Dating back to 1926. The classic American road trip, spanning 2448 miles across 8 States from Illinois, all the way to California on the West Coast. There is SO much to see and do. I spent just under 3 weeks (with a side trip to Vegas) on the road, averaging roughly around 300 miles day, but we did have to by pass some attractions. It’s impossible to stop at every museum and gift shop after all! Most of the Route passes through little forgotten towns, these are often where you’ll find the friendliest of people that are so happy to talk about their life on Route 66. Here’s a list of some of my must see Route 66 attractions, that I believe are well worth a stop.
