During my trip to Mauritius, I stayed at the Coin De Mire Attitude hotel opposite Bain Boeuf Public Beach in the north of Mauritius. So I spent a lot of my time at this beach! In this post, you’ll find a guide to what to expect when visiting Bain Boeuf beach and what beach facilities you can use as a hotel guest!

Bain Boeuf Public Beach

Facilities

🚙Parking/Bus

So let’s start with the public area of the beach first. Just off the main road, there’s a large car park alongside a grass area with lots of trees. A bus stop can be found at either end of the beach (we quite enjoyed catching the local buses!). There are plenty of benches and bins in the shade and is popular with locals, especially on the weekends.

🚽Toilets & Showers

Here you’ll also find public toilets and a couple of outdoor showers. As weird as it sounds, I was pretty impressed with the toilets at the public beaches in Mauritius. They were free to use and always clean.

BUT there is NO TOILET PAPER. For me, this wasn’t a problem, because I always carry spare toilet paper in my bag. I was always prepared, so I didn’t really think twice about there not being any provided.

🍦Nearest Food & Drink

Other than a small souvenir stall (selling coconut bowls, jewellery, beach cover-ups etc), there are no other facilities.

Sometimes an ice cream van would pull up into the car park or along the road, but there are no other places to buy food or drinks. The closest place is Chez Bala supermarket, which is a 3-minute walk away, opposite the bus stop.

You can buy snacks and drinks here, but is a typical ‘village’ shop where you can’t actually go inside. A few items are on display outside the shop, otherwise, you’ll need to ask the assistant to get things off the shelf for you. We found this a little tricky on our first day as we had no idea what to ask for. None of the items have a price displayed either.

Alternatively, a 20-minute walk away is Winners supermarket in Pereybere. This is a regular large self-service supermarket which has prices listed on the shelves, a bakery with a hot counter and they also accept payments by card.

A couple of men also walk along the beach selling coconuts. However I never bought one, so I can’t say how much they were charging for them.

The Beach

Bain Boeuf Beach is accessed via steps, or by a slope which goes down under a small bridge. Between the car park and the beach, there are a couple of staggered areas overlooking the beach with more benches.

At first look, the beach isn’t the nicest as the majority has a line of sandbags along the water line. This is to help with erosion, but if you are expecting a ‘paradise’ looking beach, Bain Boeuf potentially isn’t it. If you walk along the beach, in the direction of Pereybere (with the water on your right), there are some lovely looking beaches just around the corner.

The water where the sandbags are, is quite rocky and shallow, not the best for swimming. There are also lots of boats and no designated swimming area. Bain Boeuf Beach is however considered a lagoon though, that is ‘protected’ by a barrier reef. So the water is very calm.

This area of the beach is also mostly grass, not sand. I quite liked the grassy areas because being wet and sitting on sand doesn’t mix very well! Benches line the wall too. At the opposite end of the beach, there are some rock pools which are fun to explore.

The beach also faces the sunset in the evenings too. We saw some really good ones during our stay!

Coin De Mire Attitude Hotel

As you walk away from the car park, in the direction of Coin De Mire island which can be seen from the beach, the sandbags do stop and there is a small sandy beach. Although there is public access into the water here, the facilities in this area do belong to the Coin De Mire Attitude hotel. Most things are included in the room rate.

If you are a guest of the hotel, you can use the sun loungers and umbrellas for free. There are no other sun lounger rentals along the beach available to the public, just the wooden benches.

One of my personal favourite things about being a guest of the Coin De Mire Attitude, is that they have free water sports equipment. This included: pedal boats, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. The calm waters in the lagoon made stand-up paddle boarding pretty easy.

(If you’re not a hotel guest, ‘Sexy Boy’ is based on Bain Boeuf Beach and is a water sport provider, offering activities like wakeboarding, dolphin watching and snorkelling trips. I personally didn’t use him, but he is highly recommended on TripAdvisor. Justdiving on the main road do SCUBA diving trips too).

Coin De Mire Attitude also offers a daytime entertainment programme with activities taking place on the beach, including:

  • beach clean-ups (they are an eco-hotel and encourage caring for the planet)
  • swimming in the lagoon
  • stand up paddle boarding lessons
  • FREE glass bottom boat rides
  • Paid boat trips

Glass Bottom Boat

I was impressed that the hotel ran FREE glass-bottom boat trips too! During my visit, they went at 11am and 2pm and goes to 3 spots along the reef, within the lagoon.

Depending on the water conditions, the trips last between 30-40 minutes. If it’s too windy or rainy, they do get cancelled and they do operate on a first come, first served basis.

As someone who has snorkelled all around the world, the corals in the lagoon around Bain Boeuf weren’t great. A large portion has suffered from coral bleaching due to the rising water temperatures.

I was travelling with my parents who have never been snorkelling. They enjoyed being able to experience something similar without getting wet! Especially being able to see the fish.

Final Words

Did I like Bain Boeuf Beach? Yes, I liked how quiet it was and I could always get a sun lounger no matter what time I went down to the beach. It was a peaceful place to read and relax. I also liked the water sports included as a Coin De Mire Attitude hotel guest.

For places to stay in Mauritius, I found it really good value in comparison to other beachfront hotels. As I was travelling with my parents, we had looked at package holidays with British Airways, Emirates, Tui and Virgin. Coin De Mire Attitude with British Airways Holidays was one of the ‘cheapest’ offered by a long shot.

North Mauritius Beaches I Visited

  • Bain Boeuf
  • Mon Choisey
  • Grand Baie
  • La Cuvette
  • Pereybere
  • Cap Malheureux

Is Bain Boeuf the best beach? No, not necessarily. If you are looking for a more ‘tropical’ looking beach, Mon Choisey is a good option. It’s a long sandy beach with swimming areas, sun lounger rentals, food trucks and public toilets with showers and changing rooms.

I also visited Grand Baie Public Beach and La Cuvette. Both beaches have public toilets and street food options but are quite small. All three are easily reached by public bus.

A 30-minute walk either side of Bain Boeuf, is Pereybere Public Beach and Cap Malheureux. As mentioned above, some of the beaches between Bain Boeuf and Pereybere are beautiful. It is possible to walk along the beach between the two, but there are a few rocks you need to climb over. There aren’t any facilities on the beaches in between.

Pereybere is a lively beach with: shaded areas, a designated swimming area, paid water sport rentals, toilets and showers, food trucks and Winners supermarket just around the corner.

Another ‘tropical-looking beach’ is Cap Malheureux. It’s not so much a beach where you’d spend the day/swim, but here you’ll find Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux. Otherwise known as ‘the red roof church’, which sits next to the beach, it’s well worth checking out. There are benches and public toilets.
