Trogir is a port town 10 minutes from Split Airport in Croatia. The Old Town area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Some people visit as part of a day trip from Split, or use it as a stopover point before or after a sailing trip. If you are looking for accommodation in Trogir, here’s what I found, based on my experience!

Is Trogir Expensive for Hotels?

I visited Trogir in the month of June, which technically falls in the shoulder season. I found that on average, most hotels in Trogir, on the ‘budget’ end of the scale, averaged around €60 a night as a solo traveller, which in comparison to other places in Europe, I didn’t think was too bad. (Of course you can get accommodation on the higher end too).

As expected, in the peak of summer, the prices do increase slightly, especially in the heart of Old Town but there are still a few ‘budget’ options available.

Best Areas to Stay in Trogir

There are 3 main areas where you can stay while in Trogir, on the mainland, in the Old Town (which is actually a very small island!), or closer to the marina area on the larger island of Čiovo.

Staying in Trogir Old Town (Best for First-Time Visitors)

  • central location
  • limited accommodation but in the heart of the UNESCO Old Town

For me, even though I was joining a sailing trip, so ultimately would be going in and out of the marina, I wanted to stay in the centre of Old Town. After all, this is where the main UNESCO World Heritage Site is. It has cute alleyways, a few things to see and do, places to sit and watch the world go by and lots of choice for places to eat and drink.

A potential downside for some travellers, is that the Old Town is on a little island, that only really has one road around the edge of just a small part of it

The majority of the accommodation options would mean you’d need to walk the last part with your luggage, you may not be able to be dropped outside the front door. I used to public bus from the airport and the bus stop is on the other side of the river on the mainland, so it wasn’t a problem for me, as I was expecting to walk the last part anyway.

The buildings are all quite old too. For example, the hotel where I stayed only had stairs. The reception was on the second floor and my room was on the first floor.

Even though it was a little noisy until around 11pm, which you expect when you are in the centre of a place, I really liked being so close to everything.

Mainland Trogir

  • closer to bus stops
  • easier airport access
  • less scenic but practical

The mainland part of Trogir is a little more residential, think supermarkets, petrol stations and other businesses etc, rather than being thick in the middle of the tourist area. As mentioned, the main bus station is on the mainland though and one of my favourite areas was the market. There are a few nice places to sit by the waterfront for a drink and the Thai restaurant close by is good too.

Being outside of the Old Town, a lot of the accommodation options on the mainland are apartments, rather than typical hotels. There are a couple of hotels though, such as the Hotel Bellevue Trogir*, which does have a lift for rooms on the higher floors.

Marina Area/Čiovo (Best for Sailing Trips)

  • easy access to boats
  • functional rather than touristy
  • more relaxing in areas

There are lots of accommodation options on the larger island of Čiovo. This area is also closest to the marina, closer to the beaches, has some restaurants etc, but you can still access the Old Town via a bridge. Just like the mainland side of Trogir, a lot of the accommodations are apartments, there are a few hotels that have additional amenities such as swimming pools (Brown Beach House & Spa* is on Čiovo island, it has a pool and is next to the public beach).

The cheapest accommodation I had found in Trogir was Hostel Marina Trogir*, right next to the marina. This may not be for everyone as it only has shared dorm rooms, but it had lots of highly rated reviews. For me, even though I try to travel on a budget, I do prefer private rooms. It would be very convenient though for sailing trips.

My Experience – Rooms Roso in Trogir Old Town

  • good price
  • convenient location

I was really surprised that the second cheapest accommodation, and the one I booked, was right in the centre of the Old Town! I stayed at Rooms Roso* in a single room.

📍Rooms Roso in Trogir, Croatia🇭🇷 I was quite impressed that I managed to find a hotel in the centre of the Old Town in Trogir Croatia (near Split) for only €40 a night for a private room/bathroom solo occupancy! Most were upwards of €60 or there was a hostel on the other side of the water for €30 in an 8 bed dorm! This is Rooms Roso, just a short walk from the main square. Did the job perfectly for what I needed. Towels are not included though, so you will need to take your own, and payment was in cash. It had a single bed, a sofa, a small wardrobe, bedside table/chair, fan, a TV, free WiFi, and a private bathroom. The room was basic but did the job. (During my stay a single room was €40 for 1 night. Click the link to find current rates*).

I also liked the way the window had wooden shutters which gave the room character with an Old Town feel. They worked surprisingly well considering there were no curtains and the view overlooked a courtyard type area.

Something I didn’t realise is that towels were not included, no shower towel, or hand towel. Even in hostels the shared bathrooms usually have something you can dry your hands with, even if shower towels aren’t included.

I’ve stayed in hundreds of hotels and I’m used to at least having a hand towel provided, so I didn’t even think this may not be provided! It had pretty good reviews on booking.com, but it was something that I didn’t see mentioned at all! As I was going sailing, I had packed my own ‘beach towel’, but this may be something you need to consider when staying.

At the time of my stay, it was also cash on arrival, however this wasn’t a problem, as this IS something I do always look out for when reserving a place to stay! They also have a roof terrace, which you are able to use (they do dry bed sheets out here on nice days though!), as well as a small kitchen area and a guest fridge.

Rooms Roso is located in Trogir Old Town

The location was perfect for me! The main square was literally 2 minutes from the front door of the hotel, and the promenade was less than a minute in the other direction. For the other logistics of my trip, it was right in the middle between Trogir bus station and the marina for my sailing trip!

Because my visit to Trogir was centred around the sailing trip and I knew I only had 1 night in Trogir, staying at Rooms Roso was 100% the right decision. It was budget friendly, good for a solo traveller and central. I wanted something that worked logistically and it ticked all of those boxes.

If I was using Trogir as my actual destination, and my accommodation would play a more important role in my trip (rather than just somewhere to base myself and sleep), I probably would have pushed the budget and booked somewhere like the Brown Beach House & Spa on Čiovo. Purely for the pool, views and it being in a quieter, more relaxed area, but still close enough to wander into the Old Town!
