One thing I love when I travel is going into supermarkets and finding local snacks that I can’t find at home! Although when there is a language barrier, unless I have Google translate camera, I tend to ‘play it safe’ and pick items that I think I will definitely like! A great thing about subscription boxes is that they give a wide range of items that you may not usually try. Here is my review of ToykoTreat, a Japanese snack monthly subscription box!

Disclosure (AD Gifted): I was gifted a ToykoTreat snack box in return for my honest review.

ToykoTreat

Being an authentic Japanese snack box, of course, all of the packaging for the items is written in Japanese. Each box contains a 20-page helpful guide with pictures and descriptions about the flavours of each snack and allergen information.

As well as being able to enjoy the different snacks, the guide shares all about Japanese culture and traditions. My box was the limited edition Halloween box, so it gave recommendations for spooky Anime, how Japanese people celebrate Halloween and even events that can be enjoyed at the amusement parks (such as Universal Studios Japan).

Halloween Themed Snack Box

In my box, I received 16 snacks. I was very impressed that at least 4 were very good-sized items. There were 6 that I would consider savoury snacks, 9 that were sweet, plus 1 drink. Although a couple could crossover as they were savoury with sweet elements. This is perfect for me as I do prefer sweet over savoury.

Sweet Items

Sweet items include a mix of gummy candy and sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes and breads.

Sweet Snack Items

-Halloween Marshmallow

10/10 I want more

All other marshmallows have been ruined for me now! One wasn’t enough, I wanted a whole pack. I don’t normally like marshmallows but when they are filled with custard, AMAZING.

-Halloween Snack Stick

6/10 tasted a little burnt

This item was surprisingly lightweight! It is a puffed wheat stick covered in brown sugar. My mum loved it, I thought the brown sugar tasted a little bitter, but it had a unique flavour.

-Mini Hi-Chew

10/10 lots of flavour

I have tried Hi-Chew Japanese candy before. They have lots of fruity flavour, but they are super, super chewy and have almost like a rubbery texture!

-Rich Caramel Danish

7/10 nice caramel aftertaste

Not all of the snacks were totally Halloween-themed, which I was fine with. The danish tasted like a light, fluffy brioche. It wasn’t sticky or sugary, but it did have a strong caramel aftertaste. This was one of the big items, it was giant! I ended up sharing it and still had a massive chunk for myself!

-KitKat Apple Pie (10 in pack)

9/10 strong creamy, apple flavour!

Japan is known for its unique flavours of KitKat. When I visited Narita on a layover, I bought strawberry, matcha and melon KitKats. In the October 2024 TokyoTreat box I received a bag of 10 fun-sized Apple Pie KitKats!

-Pai No Mi Mini Pies Japanese Pudding

8/10 custard is always a winner

Another big item, this was a box of mini puff pastries with custard in the middle. Very yummy, I could quite easily eat the whole box in one go but I held myself back. I love custard, so it’s a winning flavour for me.

-Halloween Choco Pie

7/10 as expected

The choco pie was as expected, a sponge cream with cream in the centre and covered in chocolate!

-Boo Ghost Gummies

10/10 good, strong apple flavour

The pack had seven individually wrapped apple chews. I loved the flavour, they make your tongue go bright blue and you can tear them into strips. They have a similar texture to the Hi-Chews but not so obvious as they are thinner.

-Angel Pie

9/10 but confused by the description!

The Angel Pie confused me! The picture had what looked like a chocolate-covered cake/biscuit, but the write-up in the guide said ‘salty and umami nut & cracker mix, infused with a strong Japanese curry flavour’.

I couldn’t taste any curry flavour, but it was exactly as I expected from the picture, a soft chocolate biscuit! (Similar to a Wagon Wheel).

Savoury Items

For savoury items, these can be noodles, crackers, crisps and other salty treats.

Savoury Snack Items

-Pari Pari Pumpkin Senbei Cracker

3/10 plain/dry

This is a pumpkin-shaped rice cracker with a pumpkin flavour. It tasted similar to a Ritz cracker but with a very very slightly sweet flavouring.

-Spooky Spicy Crackers

9/10 does what it says in the tin, nice flavour

The pack did make me laugh because the flavour is listed as ‘spicy numbing‘ and I can confirm that is exactly what it tastes like! The pack contains little bite-sized crackers with a really nice flavour. You only need a few at a time though because they did start making my tongue go numb!

-Curry Ramen Noodles

9/10 nice flavour

I was very impressed that you got a whole pack of Ramen noodles! Obviously, they don’t look exactly like the picture, you are expected to add the vegetables and egg in yourself. You get the block of noodles and then a pack of liquid curry soup.

I did put them in the microwave for 3 minutes, but it did make all the water overspill out of the jug and into my microwave! So I added more water and put them in for another minute and then added the soup mix. It’s pretty spicy but has a nice taste. I really liked them and it was nice to have a hot Japanese snack option!

-Halloween Pizza Puffs

4/10 not a strong flavour

I personally do not like crisps/cheese flavour, so I gave these to my mum. They just look like cheese balls, but she said that the flavour wasn’t very strong.

-Halloween Harvest Karinto

9/10 surprisingly sweet

I thought these were going to be like the vegetable sticks that you can get in the USA. They are a traditional fried snack made with autumn vegetables like carrot, onion and sweet potato. I was expecting a more savoury taste, but they were actually sweet and crispy! I liked them.

-White Shrimp Potato Snack

1/10 I don’t like seafood and it had a strong seafood taste, texture was nice though

I couldn’t actually find this one in the booklet, but I used the translate lens to read the Japanese on the packaging. Where I knew that I don’t like cheese balls, so in all honesty, I didn’t try them, BUT I did try the potato snack because I do like regular prawn crackers.

I liked the texture but the shrimp flavour was SO STRONG and I don’t like seafood. So my rating was purely down to my personal likes and dislikes. I gave them to my dad though and he LOVED them, said they tasted similar to crab!

As mentioned, that’s a good thing about snack boxes though. I know I would never knowingly buy something so obviously shrimp flavour but coming in a subscription box format, you can try things that you wouldn’t usually pick up.

-Halloween Fruit Juice Potion

4/10 flavour wasn’t very strong

I liked the idea behind the fruit juice potion, but personally, I don’t really like the taste of powdered juice drinks. There are 5 different flavours, so it is random as to what one you might receive. I had a green-coloured powder that was actually strawberry flavour!

I believe the boxes do often contain a liquid drink, rather than a powdered one.

How To Get Your Own TokyoTreat Box

There are several different subscription box options available on the TokyoTreat website. You can get a one-off monthly box or a 3, 6 or 12-month subscription. The longer the subscription, the less you pay per box!
