Yay! You’ve made it to Key West, the Southernmost point in the USA! It’s a stones throw away from Cuba, there’s palm trees, cocktails everywhere, pies made from lime, all that’s left is to relax on the beach right?! In this post I share with you some of the Key West beaches that you’ll find on this island!
When I knew I was heading down to Florida for a winter getaway, I knew that snorkelling Key West was high up there on my list of things I wanted to do! There are several different companies offering all sorts of snorkel trips but I opted to go with Fury!
Marathon to Key West may only be 45 miles apart, with a straight through drive time of around an hour, but the following stops should definitely be on your itinerary! The Florida Keys as a road trip is pretty short as far as road trips go, spanning just 112 miles of US Route 1, however it makes up for it in uniqueness. Also known as the ‘Overseas Highway’, the majority of the road is exactly that, a road over the sea! The highway crosses 29 of the Florida Keys islands which are connected by 42 bridges!
I’ve had a bit of a soft spot for sea turtles for a while now. One of my first solo trips was to Costa Rica where I joined a sea turtle conservation project and I have since been fortunate enough to swim alongside these animals in Australia, the Maldives and Belize. During my trip to the Florida Keys, I knew I had to pay a visit to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon and check out the amazing work that they are doing for these creatures.
So I’ve noticed a trend in the Midwest, lots of people head south for the winter because it gets so. damn. COLD! I found flights from Chicago to Miami for $130 return and treated myself to a weekend in the sun for my birthday. Yes, it was time to tick the Florida Keys off my bucket list and I headed down to Key West in December!
