Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Michigan – The Midwest’s Mini Sahara

There’s something about sand dunes that I find incredible.  I guess it’s a landscape that isn’t a common one.  It’s an environment that’s usually associated with boiling hot desert like conditions that aren’t easily accessible (believe me, I’ve camped in the Sahara Desert during a sand storm!).  Thanks to a roadside sign on the I94, advertising ‘dune rides’, I did a bit of research and discovered Silver Lake Sand Dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Sand Boarding in Western Australia

After getting a taste for Australia in 2008, I really wanted to go back and road trip the west coast, escape the cities and find some of the real Australia.  Lancelin is just a short 1 hour 30 drive north from the city of Perth, yet it is home to lots of giant bright white sand dunes!  The dunes were definitely a highlight of my trip and I’d recommend a stop in Lancelin to anyone!
