You may have noticed that I’m slightly obsessed with my Fitbit Flex. Now more than ever because I signed up for Run The Year, a just for fun fitness challenge with the aim of walking/running/hiking 2,017 miles in 2017! To put this into perspective, to complete this alone, it would mean doing 5.5miles (13,000 steps) EVERYDAY for the whole year! Don’t worry, you can also sign up with a buddy and complete the challenge as part of a team!
I opted for the $58 ‘Get It All’ registration which included a whole heap of goodies to help me complete the task:
- Access to an online fitness tracker which syncs with my Fitbit
- Access to a private Facebook community
- An INTERACTIVE medal
- A milestone yearbook
- A poster to track my goals
- A Dry Fit t-shirt
- Entry to 12 months of fitness challenges
My team mate is 4000 miles away…
This challenge has helped me and my Mum feel closer to each other despite me now living in America! When I was in the UK, we would go for walks/a jog almost every single day, it’s something I really miss doing.
However we now virtually walk together by being team mates in this challenge! The online tracker is great. Not only does it show and track my individual miles, but by adding my Mum into my ‘team’ I can see her daily mileage and our combined total!
This does mean that I spy on her…if she hasn’t logged many miles, I do tell her off and encourage her to do better! She’s now even making use of my running machine that I left behind in the UK!
I reckon I can get close to the 2,017 mile target by myself, so our aim by December is to complete 3000 joint miles!
AND TODAY – 19th April 2017, our combined mileage hit 1000! Yay, celebration!!! (I’m a few miles off 600 solo miles!)
12 Month Challenges
The 12 month challenges was part of the package I wasn’t completely interested in. These are additional activities on top of the daily miles. However one that I will try and complete is June’s…to complete 4, 5k runs in the month! I used to run 5k almost daily at one point and it’s something that I’ve let slip!
It also coincides perfectly with my visit home in June! Me, my mum and sister have signed up for a 5k bubble run! I love how creative 5k fun runs have become! It really gives you motivation to sign up and be a part of them, they are always such positive, enjoyable events! (Gung Ho – Seriously Fun Inflatable 5K)
I’ll possibly do May’s Extra Mile Challenge, July’s Summer Selfie Challenge and August’s Yoga Stretch Challenge!
(You can also buy a pack of 12 pin badges that you can attach to the medal ribbon each time you complete a challenge!)
The Interactive Medal & Run The Year T-shirt
These were the main reason for signing up for the Get it All package! Rather than receiving these once you’ve completed the challenge, they send you them at the start to encourage you throughout the year!
The interactive medal is a really clever idea (and really great quality!). Run The Year encourage you to hang it up somewhere to remind you of the goal you are working towards. One side of the medal says ‘2,017 Miles’, when you reach the target either solo or as part of a team, you spin the centre part of the medal to display the ‘CRUSHED IT!’ side!
I love the t-shirt too. It’s really lightweight so I can’t wait to use it as a ‘travel’ t-shirt, especially when I’m in Belize this summer!
